USING MAP REFERENCES.
Ordnance Survey maps are covered in a nework of lines. These are numbered (a) along the top & bottom of the map from left to right, and (b) along the left and right-hand edges of the map reading from bottom to top.
An individual square on the map can be defined by the vertical line at its left-hand edge (the easting) and by the horizontal line at the bottom of the square (the northing). Thus in the diagram below the shaded square is grid 55 33.

Each of these squares is subdivided into 100 other squares
marked similarly. Thus on the map square below the church is at
map reference 556 335 and the other building is at map reference
552 333. Remember to measure Along
first then Up (A before U in the
alphabet!)

Please note that this is a simplified description to enable you to read a map well enough to find the start of a walk, for example.
