Our group covers the area in central Wiltshire bounded by the Marlborough Downs in the north and Salisbury Plain to the south. It includes the historic town of Devizes and several attractive villages. The Kennet and Avon Canal with its famous flight of locks at Caen Hill extends through Devizes towards Pewsey.
The immediate countryside gives rise to many walking opportunities including the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Pewsey Vale and Marlborough Downs. Long distance paths include the Mid-Wilts Way and the Wessex Ridgeway. Two of Wiltshire's chalk white horses are visible on hillsides around Devizes.
The group meets weekly on Sundays in Devizes for morning, afternoon or all day walks. We have a varied programme of shorter and longer walks to suit most abilities. These may be in the immediate locality or some distance away. Occasionally there may be walks arranged on other days.
Traditionally the group has an organised walking week away in May, a weekend in September and a coach trip in June. Other social events are also included in our programme throughout the year. We are a comparatively small but very friendly group, walkers and visitors are welcome to join us.
The Ramblers exists to facilitate, for the benefit of everyone, the enjoyment and discovery that walking outdoors can bring; and to promote respect for the life of the countryside. The association encourages walking; protects rights of way; defends the beauty of the countryside; and has campaigned for many years for the freedom to roam over uncultivated, open country.
Read about our Week of Walks which this year was situated in Pembrokeshire. You can see photographs on our gallery.
Our group meets at the Tesco car park in Devizes.
Cancellation Policy. If the weather on the day looks poor or very uncertain, and if you have planned to go directly to the start point rather than meet in Devizes, please call the walk leader well in advance of the start time to make sure that the walk is still on. This is to save the leader a journey to the start point when the walk has been cancelled.
Annual Coach Trip - Sunday 10th June to the Cotswolds
This year we are visiting Winchcombe in the Cotswolds and there will be two walks, a 5 mile and a 10 mile. The coach will park at Winchcombe, a picturesque Cotswold town and home of the magnificent Sudeley Castle. The Castle is part of the Historic Houses Association and a member of Great British Heritage so pass holders and members can enjoy free admission. Normal admission prices are £8.50 or £7.50 for concessions for entry to gardens, grounds and exhibitions displayed in the old banqueting hall. There may not be time to both walk and visit the castle.
For details please contact Angela on 07966 333 509 before the end of April.
