enjoyed the autumn sunshine
on the walk led by Ron
Moore on Tuesday 29th September. We started from the Beehive Park
& Ride site and walked down the west side of the Avon to
Salisbury Leisure centre, near where we paused for refreshments. We
returned on the east side and then walked under the ramparts of Old
Sarum to reach the road near the Old Castle Inn. Passing the monument
commemorating the start of triangulation mapping of England, we walked
to the car park before returning to the Inn for lunch.
The puzzle picture depicted the monument at the 'Gun End of Base'. The
base was an accurately measured line between that point and the summit
of Beacon Hill, NE of Amesbury, a distance of 6.95 miles. The 'gun'
refers to the fact that a vertical gun barrel was buried at that point
to serve as a maker.
